INDEX

1. Introduction.

This e-book is about the basic care of horse's hooves.
I am not a farrier, nor a professional in the horse industry in any way.
I am just a husband, parent and grandparent to horse lovers over many years.

2. Structure of the foot and hoof.
The Sole
The Wall
The Frog
So how does all of this allow the horse to move?

3. Catching your horse.

Before you can do anything you will need to catch your horse.
Easier said that done, but it doesn't have to be.
Most horses are relatively easy to catch,
and the hard ones can be taught…….

4. Tying your horse.

If you are by yourself then tie him to a rail.
He should not be able to get his mouth to the ground,
but not that short that he can not look around……

5. Picking Up Your Horses' Hooves.

Just the thought of picking up your horse's hooves scares some owners big time.

From experience a kick from a horse does hurt……

6. Cleaning the hoof.

A trained horse, or pony will lift his hoof willingly.
You do not need to be big and strong to lift a horse's hooves.
My 6 year old granddaughter lifts and cleans her horse's hooves daily…….

7. Trimming.
Start with the knife.
Now for the nippers.
Rasping the hoof

.

8. Hoof Care for Foals.

The condition of the foal's feet should be evaluated
when the foal is 4 to 6 weeks of age.
A veterinarian or farrier is the best source for this appraisal,
but if you are independent-minded, here's what to look for……

9. Conformation Issues.

Below I have listed what you should look for,
and results of a well conformed leg: …….

10. How Nutrition Plays A Part In Healthy Hooves.

Grass and hay is the simple way…..

11. Laminitis.

It is my understanding that Laminitis is the starting point of most hoof problems.
So if you can stop laminitis then you are a long way
towards stopping most other more serious hoof problems…

12. Check for Signs of Cracks.

Hoof cracks are a common problem in horse's hooves……

13. Puncture Wounds.

Some puncture wounds if not detected early enough
may cause severe lameness or a permanent disability………

14. Horses With Shoes.

If your horse is shod you will want to look for…….

15. Tips to Help Ensure Healthy Hooves.
