Strangles Article

Strangles What exactly is it?

Strangles is an infectious disease that affects horses! It is caused by the bacterium, Streptococcus Equi and is the most important infectious disease to effect our horses today.

Strangles is highly contagious and spreads quickly from horse to horse. Some of the most common signs of strangles will be pus discharging from the horses nasal passages. Abscesses will form in the lymph glands under the jaw and often burst and exude a thick yellow pus.

Horses infected with this disease may have associated fever, depression and may stop eating.

Although this disease is highly debilitating, with up to 3-4 months recovery time, most horses will survive the disease. Unfortunately, some horses will contract a chronic illness and worse yet, death may be the result.

An infected horse must be quarantined and your veterinary should be contacted immediately at the first signs of this disease.
