Potomac Horse Fever?

(PHF) or Equine Monocytic Ehrlichiosis also know as Potomac Horse Fever is an infectious diarrheal disease. It is caused by bacterial organism known as Ehrlichia risticii.

The exact mode of transmission is still unknown but an insect vector may be responsible. Potomac Horse Fever a seasonal disease occurring most often in late spring through the early fall months.

Severe diarrhea results in these symptoms:

a.. Rectal temperature of above 102 degrees F. b.. Diarrhea c.. Dehydration (from severe diarrhea) d.. Show colic e.. Excessive drinking f.. Lethargy g.. Grain consumption reduced h.. Off feed completely i.. Laminitis (founder)

To treat these symptoms Oxytetracycline is usually the drug of choice, although it may also be treated with tetracycline antibiotics. Treatment should include electrolyte fill-in and aggressive IV fluids. Please immediately seek professional care if your horses show any of the above symptoms.
