Horse Cribs Article

Controlling a Horse that Cribs.

Horse people have many and varied methods of dealing with a horse that cribs. I will just give you a few, tried and true methods that I have personally used and that have been successful.

The first is an anti-cribbing collar. You can find these at your local feed or where you buy gear for your horses. The collar is a leather strap that fits around your horse's neck with a Y shaped metal plate, which covers the bottom of the neck. The anti-cribbing collar constrains the neck muscles each time your horse attempts to crib. I have used this method and it actually deters the cribbing behavior in most horses.

Another method is a 'comforter'! What is a comforter? It is a substance such as rubber (usually the best) that actually covers the area in which the horse is likely to crib. Why rubber? Rubber is preferred for the longevity of use and it will not damage the horse's teeth. This is a very good method for lessoning the negative effects of cribbers but is not forthcoming as far as correcting the behavior.

Horses vary as individuals and ,therefore, the above treatments work on some and may not on others. These methods are not a cure-all and will not correct the underlying problem.

As a last alternative, surgery can be performed but, before you consider this alternative, talk to your veterinarian for specific information about cribbing and your horse.

I hope that helps if you have a horse that cribs.
